If you and your kids like getting stuck into art, head for the Yorkshire Museum.

The team are carving their way through history using a different sculpting material each week during August.

You can sculpt with soap or model with maize – the pellets stick together when you add a little water.

The museum hopes visitors will be inspired by its impressive collection of Roman artefacts, including Mars – the best example of Roman statue to be found in the country.

Assistant curator of science and archaeology learning Emma Williams said: “This summer get hands on with soap, recycled materials, maize and clay to recreate your own carvings and sculptures.

“Create portraits, mini human sculptures and Roman head pots as we look at some traditional, and not-so traditional, ways to sculpt!

“Don’t forget, kids go free with a paying adult so the summer holidays are the perfect time to visit.”

Soap sculptures

Monday August 1 – Sunday August 7

Be inspired by the museum’s Roman jet pendants. Carve your own portrait into a mini bar of soap to take away with you. Then you can wear it or wash with it!

Amazing maize modelling

Monday August 8 – Sunday August 14

Have fun with this natural modelling material. Just add a little water and these a-maizing pellets will stick together allowing you to build a mini human sculpture, piece by piece.

Junk modelling

Monday August 15 – Sunday August 21

Let your imagination run riot as you reuse and recycle a variety of materials to create a sculpture inspired by the Roman objects in our collection.

Clay sculptures

Monday August 22 – Sunday August 28

The final week involves a more traditional sculpting material. Why not make a head pot or a Roman god?

Activities run from 11am–1pm and 2pm-4pm and are included in the admission price.
