With just over a week to go to the first Micklegate Run Soapbox Challenge, the first designs are being revealed.

A lot of work has gone into the carts, which must be robust enough to withstand hurtling down the notorious cobbles yet stylish enough to catch the eye.

Forty teams are taking part in the event, sponsored by Autohorn, which takes place on Sunday, August 28. Judging by these carts it looks like a lot of imagination as well as ingenuity is going into the design and build of the Micklegate mean machines.

There will be live music, food and drink and a party atmosphere as the soapbox challenge drives York’s ‘great street’ into a prosperous new era.

One of the teams to announce their participation is Make It York. As befits the organisation that promotes the city around the world, their cart is called Market York, and will resemble a stall on Shambles Market.

Head of business at Make It York – and the team’s racing driver – Andrew Sharp said: “We might not be at Olympic standards but we’re going to give this race all we’ve got!

“We’re thrilled to be taking part and supporting this initiative to highlight and champion Micklegate and all that the street has to offer.”

Many of the teams are raising money for great causes as part of the challenge.

Make It York will be supporting York Cares, who run York Children’s University and work with disadvantaged children aged 5-14.

Chairman of the Micklegate Business Initiative Johnny Hayes said:

We hope the Micklegate Run will show people this hidden gem is the perfect setting for street parties and events.

We’re aiming to create a great celebration while investing in the street’s future and people, showing what a wonderful street this is with some brilliant independent businesses.

The day should be a lot of fun and we hope it makes everyone smile.
