Past masters! Britain’s top ten museums include two from York

Fashion exhibition Shaping The Body helped York Castle Museum boost its visitor numbers

Home to advice and reviews from millions of globetrotters, TripAdvisor is the world’s go-to travel site.

So if you’re highly rated here, you must be doing something right.

And clearly York is doing museums right – as it has not one but two in the TripAdvisor UK top ten.

York Castle Museum entered the chart for the first time after receiving thousands of positive visitor reviews.

More than 3,500 reviews are in the top category of “Excellent” and 1,400 in the “Very Good” category.

With the National Railway Museum also being named in the top ten it makes York the second best represented city in the UK after London.

TripAdvisor Top 10 UK Museums

1. British Museum, London
2. Victoria and Albert Museum, London
3. National Gallery, London
4. Natural History Museum, London
5. Churchill War Rooms, London
6. National Railway Museum, York
7. National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh
8. Titanic Belfast
9. Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow
10. York Castle Museum

Increase in visitors

Chief executive of York Museums Trust Reyahn King said they were thrilled with Castle Museum’s ranking.

“It would not have been possible without the thousands of positive reviews we have received from visitors who have been to the museum and enjoyed their visit.”

The exhibition has been well received, with visitor numbers increasing by 6% at the Castle Museum so far this financial year, compared to the same period in 2015.

This was in part thanks to Shaping the Body, an exhibition on how fashion, food and life have shaped the way we look over the last 400 years, which opened in March.

Earlier in the year TripAdvisor reviewers put York seventh in their top ten UK destinations. And St Denys Hotel made it to number nine in Britain’s top hotels for service.
