Police warning to wanted man’s associates

Thu 20 Dec, 2012 by Press Release

Issued by North Yorkshire Police

Police in York have warned that anyone helping wanted man Richard Sampson to evade arrest is committing an offence.

He has been on the run since he was recalled to prison on 11 December 2012 and officers believe his family or friends are helping him to avoid returning to custody.

Sampson, aged 31, was recalled to prison after breaching the terms of his release licence through poor behaviour.

He was released from custody on 19 November 2012 and has now breached his licence conditions three times since his initial release in 2009.

Sampson was jailed for 108 months in 2004 for three burglaries, handling stolen goods and dangerous driving.

Officers believe that he is still in York and is possibly frequenting the Acomb and Foxwood areas of the city.

Members of the public are being urged to report any sightings of him to the police or Crimestoppers straight away.

Sampson is described as white, around 6ft 2 in tall, with a medium build, green eyes and short, fair hair.

Inspector Dave Kirby, of York police, said: “People need to realise that harbouring a wanted man is an offence in itself and if you are helping Richard Sampson to avoid the police or letting him stay at your house you will be arrested as well.

“If you know where Sampson is, I suggest you contact the police straight away as you are only making things worse for him and risk getting yourself in trouble as well.

“I am also appealing to the general public to keep an eye out for Sampson and let us know if they see him.”

If you know where Richard Sampson is or have any information that can help officers to find him, please contact North Yorkshire Police on 101 – select option 2 – and ask for York Police.

If you wish to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111.

Please quote reference number 12120208297 when passing information about this incident.
