A report outlining proposals for a highway improvement scheme around Bishopthorpe Infant and Archbishop of York’s Junior school has been put to Cllr Dave Merrett, Cabinet Member for Travel, Planning and Sustainability at a decision session meeting.
The report follows a consultation with the local community, councillors, parish council and the police, with the proposed changes allowing the schools to encourage more sustainable journeys to and from school by improving conditions for walking and cycling.
The proposals include enhancing the current 20mph limit by personalising the existing signs with a road safety themed design to make them more noticeable, and removing some of the duplicated school warning signs to de-clutter the area.
In order to increase visibility of Bishopthorpe Infant school to drivers, proposals would see the existing warning sign with flashing amber lights; which is located midway down Sim Balk Lane relocated prior to the Infant School, along with a new school sign on the verge close to the entrance and the ‘school keep clear’ markings will be refreshed.
The scheme is included in the Safe Routes to School block of the Transport Capital Programme for 2012/13 and is estimated to cost in the region of £12,000 including fees, which is in line with the amount originally budgeted for.
The report recommended that Cllr Merrett approve the implementation of the proposed highway improvements.
