Which makes you wonder why handball isn’t as popular in Britain as it is elsewhere in Europe.

But York Hunters Handball is aiming to change that. The club will host the city’s first handball festival on Sunday (February 26) – and everyone is welcome.

The day will include a tournament featuring teams from Durham, Newcastle and Sunderland competing with the home team.

Not only will there be some great handball action to watch, but there will also be an opportunity on the day to try out handball for free.

Exciting and fast-paced

Looks great fun to play

York Hunters Handball club was established in May 2013. Since then the club has welcomed hundreds of people keen to try out one of the most exciting sports in Europe.

Chris Morgan, who runs the Hunters, said: “Handball is one of the world’s most exciting, fast-paced sports, which is huge across Europe, but yet to truly take off in the UK, despite a brief burst of interest following the 2012 Olympics.

“It’s a very simple sport to pick up which is great for fitness, and it combines the best of basketball, rugby and football.”

Handball beginner’s guide

Handball is an indoor sport with seven players a side – 1 goalkeeper and 6 outfield players

The aim of the game is to simply score as many goals by throwing the ball into the net

You can’t enter the penalty area

And you can only take 3 steps with the ball
