It could be the shortest bar crawl in York.

A property across the road from Pivni on the narrow street of Patrick Pool could is set to be converted into a bar.

City of York Council has granted permission for the building, empty since Papillon hairdressers left in December 2015, to be turned into a café bar.

Speculative plans submitted to the council show a small bar with 20 covers. A report says:

It is envisaged that a future operator would serve a small specialist range of beer/ wine, soft drinks teas and coffees and a limited range of cold food/ snacks and would be similar in scale and nature to the following establishments:

  • Pivni, Patrick Pool (opposite)
  • Fossgate Social, Fossgate
  • The Attic, Kings Square
  • Enhance vitality

The Guildhall planning panel objected to the proposal, saying: “We object to more retail space being lost. How many more cups of coffee can anyone drink; the city centre is overrun with café and eateries.”

    But planners granted permission.

The report stated: “It is not considered that the proposed use would add materially to the level of activity already present in this part of the city centre…

“The proposed use would not cause undue harm to the shopping function of the street and could potentially enhance vitality.”

If a bar does open it will be allowed to open daily between 8am and 11pm.
