A word to the wise. York is hosting a spoken word celebration of Yorkshire on the county’s special day.

Yorkshire Poetry Anthology launch

The Basement, City Screen, Coney Street, York

Tues Aug 1 8pm-10.30pm

Entry is £4; the book is £9.99

More details

Two city poets, Miles Salter and Oz Hardwick, have edited the Valley Press Anthology Of Yorkshire Poetry.

And they are launching it on Yorkshire Day – Tuesday, August 1 – at the Basement in York.

This rather nifty animated film, York on a Spring Afternoon by James David Condon gives you a flavour of what to expect…

The anthology features works by many talented poets – including several well-known friends of YorkMix.

Miles himself, of course, is a contributor to Mix. And another of the featured poets, the very talented Carole Bromley, is our poet-in-residence.

Antony Dunn is another of the writers in the anthology, and he took over from Carole as the judge of the York Literature Festival / YorkMix poetry competition this year.

And the winner of the 2015 competition, Wendy Pratt, is another of the writers.

Also featured are works by Britain’s Poet Laureate, Dame Carol Ann Duffy, and well-known writer, broadcaster and ‘Bard of Barnsley’, Ian McMillan.

The Valley Press Anthology of Yorkshire Poetry “pays tribute to the traditions that have made Yorkshire a world-famous destination, but looks beyond ‘flat caps and whippets’ to celebrate a thoroughly modern county, whose inhabitants are as diverse as the rural and urban landscapes they call home”.
