A monster-sized convoy could cause big delays for York drivers today (Friday).

The abnormal load weighs in at 134 tonnes and measures 38m long by 4.5m high.

It will leave Portastor, which makes solid steel modular buildings as part of the Portakabin Group, on Jockey Lane, Huntington, at 9.15am.

Travelling under police escort it is due to arrive at Dunnington is 10.30am.

The route is

  • Jockey Lane
  • A1036
  • Hopgrove Roundabout
  • A64
  • Hazlebush Lane
  • Stockton on the Forest
  • Holtby Lane
  • Straight Lane
  • A166
  • Grimston Bar
  • A1079

It then leaves at Kexby, travelling on to Hull Docks. This route has been used in previous years for this type of load.

A City of York Council spokesman said: “We advise drivers avoid the route where possible or allow extra time between 9.15am and 11am on both days.”

The convoy is unable to use the A64 (too high for the bridges) or the official high load route through Warthill (unable to negotiate the S-bend).

Street furniture removal has been arranged where required. All the costs involved will be invoiced to the haulage company Collett & Sons.

The cargo is being shipped to the United Arab Emirates.

Collett’s senior projects manager Liam McLoughlin said: “Alongside the police, we will have BT Openreach engineers and engineers from Northern Powergrid in the convoy to assist with overhead telephone and power lines.

“It is anticipated that the convoy will have to stop a number of times along the route and in parts thereafter it will be travelling at speeds of 15 – 20 miles per hour.”
