North Yorkshire Police joins forces with Smarter York team to spring clean city

Fri 17 May, 2013 by Press Release

Issued by City of York Council

North Yorkshire Police is joining forces with City of York Council, Bell Farm Management committee and the North Yorkshire and York Community Payback Team to spring clean in the Bell Farm area of the city next week.

Residents are invited to come and take part in a litter pick in the Bull Ring and South Beck areas on Monday 25 May as part of the Smarter York spring clean scheme.

Volunteers will join the local neighbourhood policing team, the North Yorkshire and York Community Payback Team, The Bell Farm Management Committee and the council to help make light work of any litter in the area.

The North Yorkshire and York Community Payback Team have been working with the council throughout May to help carry out the month-long campaign. They have been carrying out tasks such as painting over graffiti, fixing broken fencing, picking litter and clearing overgrown areas.

Cllr David Levene, Cabinet Member for Environmental Services, said: “This is a good way for many different people and organisations from the community to come together and help to create a Smarter York.”

PCSO Toni Wadsworth, said: “North Yorkshire Police is committed to improving the quality of life of our communities and initiatives like this can go someway towards achieving that aim.

“By working with local residents to repair any damage caused by anti-social behaviour in their neighbourhood, we can show offenders that their actions will not be tolerated.”

Smarter York aims to help maintain a clean, green and safe environment for York. The initiative encourages and works with residents to create attractive neighbourhoods with a real sense of community and to tackle the things that can spoil our neighbourhoods for example littering or graffiti.

For more information please visit the Smarter York web page or follow @SmarterYork on Twitter. Residents can nominate an area they think is in need of a spring clean by calling 01904 551551 or emailing ycc@york.gov.uk or download the Smarter York mobile phone application from all app stores.

Litter pickers, refuse sacks and high visibility vests are available to volunteers on the day.
