Funding to provide alley gates in York

Wed 29 May, 2013 by Press Release

Issued by City of York Council

City of York Council and Safer York Partnership are investing £70,000 over the next two years for new alley gating schemes to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour across the city and help residents feel safe and secure in their homes.

Alley gates are placed on alleyways to the rear of houses to deter burglars from gaining access to homes.

This year it is proposed that the new gates will be installed on alleyways within Micklegate, Clifton and Holgate Wards. Affected residents will be consulted shortly and before any final decisions are made. If residents support the proposals it is anticipated that these schemes will be completed by the end of March 2014.

The proposed scheme in Micklegate represents the largest of the three schemes with five alleyways to be consulted on. A single alleyway has been put forward for consultation in both Clifton Ward and Holgate Ward. More information on alley gates can be found at www.york.gov.uk/alleygating.

Councillor Linsay Cunningham-Cross, Cabinet Member for Crime and Stronger Communities said: “Alley gates have a proven track record in reducing crime levels in the areas where they are placed, so today’s announcement is really positive news. The £70,000 the Council and Safer York Partnership are investing over the next two years to provide alley gating will help reduce crime and anti-social behaviour across the city and help residents feel safer and more secure in their homes.

“The proposals for the new alley gating schemes will be put out to public consultation and should be fully installed by the end of March 2014. We are listening to local residents and realise that tackling crime and anti-social behaviour is essential so that everyone in York can enjoy living in this wonderful city.”
