A group of Year 5 pupils from Clifton Green Primary School will be helping to make a Smarter York on Thursday 23 May when 47 pupils will make light work of litter in the area.
The litter pick of Ashton Park, Crombie Park and the area around Crichton Avenue shops will help the young people to achieve their Archbishop of York Youth Trust Young Leaders Award. The award scheme aims to help equip young people to be a force for good in the local community and encourages to develop a mindset for helping others.
The Year 5 classes have taken part in six sessions learning about what it really means to be a ‘young leader’ involving team-based activities and making observational walks around the local community. The litter pick is the culmination of their hard work to serve their local community in practical ways and help bring about the change they want to see by making their local area litter free.
Councillor David Levene, City of York Council’s Cabinet Member for Environmental services, said: “It is really encouraging to see that the Year 5 pupils from Clifton Green Primary School are setting a shining example in their local community and are ready and willing to help do their bit towards making a Smarter York.”
Smarter York aims to help maintain a clean, green and safe environment for York. The initiative encourages and works with residents to create attractive neighbourhoods with a real sense of community and to tackle the things that can spoil our neighbourhoods for example littering or graffiti.
