City of York Council is showing its support for the work of the Armed Forces ahead of Armed Forces Day on Sunday June 30.
In the run-up to Armed Forces Day in York, the Mansion House will be proudly flying the Armed Forces Standard (flag) from Monday 24 June to celebrate and commemorate the hard work and dedication of Armed Forces personnel.
The Rt Hon the Lord Mayor of York, Cllr Julie Gunnell said: “I am delighted that York is able to fly the flag in support of Armed Forces personnel with a gesture such as this. It is only fitting that York, as a garrison city since AD71, can officially recognise the courage of our servicemen and women and their families and the sacrifices that they make.”
The main objectives of Armed Forces Day are to honour and celebrate the work of the UK Armed Forces and those that support them. The day also aims to encourage members of the public to actively engage in a celebration of the UK’s Armed Forces and to raise awareness and enhance the reputation of the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force, Reservists, Veterans, Cadets and the wider Armed Forces community including service families.
Links between the armed forces and the city were strengthened when representatives from both bodies and other key York leaders and organisations, officially signed the York Community Covenant Agreement in 2011. It’s aim is to strengthen the relationship between military and civilian communities by mutual support and participation in events and joint projects.
