City of York Council has helped create a national toolkit to support health and social care professionals plan services for carers.
The Carers’ Hub Toolkit for Commissioners was designed by the Carers Trust, working with local authorities –of which York was one – and other health and social care partners.
Its aim is to give providers an overview of the services for carers in their local area helping them to address gaps in provision, pinpoint which groups and communities are being served and improve communication between carers, service commissioners and providers.
Frances Perry, Carers and Strategic Policy Manager, City of York Council, explained: “We estimate that there are over 18,000 carers in York alone, many of whom have been caring for their relatives or friends for a considerable period of time. They are a vitally important, but often forgotten part of a local community and it’s crucial that care commissioners ensure that services are available for and tailored to carers.
“The new toolkit is very user friendly and will help give social care providers clarity about what services are already out there, and what new services might be needed, which can often be difficult when services for carers often spring up from grass roots level.
“I was delighted to be asked to be involved in such an important, national initiative and it’s great that York’s experience in working with carers is recognised.”
Councillor Tracey Simpson Laing, Cabinet member for Health and Adult Social Services, City of York Council, said: “Carers play a crucial role in our communities and York has a strong history of celebrating and supporting the vital work that they do.
“York has further underlined its commitment to carers with the city’s Health and Wellbeing Board adopting the national Carers’ Charter last week, enshrining a commitment to empower and support carers, and inviting a number of carers to share their experiences with the Board.”
