Young care leavers in the York area are being offered one-to-one support to help them make the transition into adulthood.
The Springboard Project supports young people aged 16 – 25 who are in or have been in care and are living in York, Selby and Ryedale.
Funded by the Big Lottery Fund and run by Foundation, a Leeds-based charity, the project pairs young people witha local support worker who can provide a range of support including pre-tenancy training, help finding work or education, independent living skills and confidence building activities.
The young person can also be paired with a volunteer mentor who will offer regular one-to-one sessions, support and act as a positive influence in the young person’s life.
Mentors can help with a wide range of activities and issues, including helping a young person prepare for job interviews, attending university open days and dealing with budgeting.
Laura Walton, from City of York Council’s Youth Support Services team, said: “The transition from teenage years to adulthood can be a tricky time for many young people and it can be even harder without the support of a parent of relative.
“The Springboard project aims to make a significant, long-lasting difference to young people by offering extra support and guidance once they have left care.
“Funding for the project is only guaranteed until 2016 so it’s vitally important that we spread the word about the initiative and get young people to come forward as soon as possible if they would like to be involved.
“And we’re also looking for volunteer mentors to come forward. Training is provided and no previous experience is necessary, as long as you have a non-judgemental attitude and a willingness to help disadvantaged young people.”
