At approximately 22.50 22/08/13 North Yorkshire Fire & rescue Service experienced a high volume of calls and a sudden spate of incidents affecting York city and the surrounding area.

After a huge cloudburst over the city, Fire Control operators were quickly inundated with members of the public phoning 999 reporting flash flooding to their properties and streets in the local area.

There were also reports of automatic fire alarms being triggered in premises due to rain water and power cuts from the lightening.

Fire Control quickly began mobilising fire appliances to locations reported and attended some 23 incidents within an hour and a half, all within the York area.

Appliances from as far as Harrogate, Ripon and Malton attended the area to support local crews along with Tadcaster, Selby and Easingwold all playing crucial parts.

On Carr Lane in York, Acomb crews attended four properties affected by approx two foot of flood water and used a light portable pump to reduce water levels until they started to naturally recede.

Acomb crews also attended Nunthorpe Road to assist residents affected by flash flooding helping with salvage work and pumping water levels down.

Over on Walton Place we assessed water levels affecting a garage and garden of a property and Water Lane was affected by approximately two feet of water.

Tadcaster crews helped a taxi which broke down in the water leaving its occupants stranded. Crews pushed the vehicle to dry land allowing the occupants to escape the flood waters.

During the spate of flooding Fire Control also received a call to reports of a fire in a summer house of a property attached to a garage in Haxby, York.

Huntington and a Tadcaster appliances attended the incident which had been caused due to candles being left unattended.

The occupiers of the property used the garden hose on the fire prior to the arrival of fire crews who used a hose reel and thermal imaging camera to ensure the fire was extinguished.
