Another large hotel is planned for York city centre.

The former Carpetright store on Layerthorpe could be demolished – and a huge Premier Inn built in its place.

A statement says the brand’s hotel on Blossom Street is almost full most of the time.

Premier Inn’s hotels are currently open to key workers only – but customers can book rooms from July 4 onwards.

A planning application has been submitted to City of York Council for a “bespoke development”on the Layerthorpe site – which is almost an acre in size.

The four-storey building would also have parking for 43 cars, including four disabled bays, a drop-off space, six electric car charging bays and 20 cycle spaces.

Create jobs

Yet more hotel rooms…

A statement says: “Tourism is highly important and contributes to the city’s culture and economy.

“It is estimated York has over 6.9 million visitors per year spending more than £564 million each year and of those visitors 22 per cent stayed overnight spending approximately £399 million. 75 per cent of visitors come for leisure and 25 per cent for business.

“The emerging local plan regarding tourism states the need to build a strong, diverse economy including improving the choice and quality of visitor accommodation.”

The hotel would create permanent jobs, according to the application, and offer apprenticeships, training and development programmes to staff.

It says: “The growth of new and future developments has seen a rise in student and residential accommodation in the area surrounding the site, along with hotels to keep up with the growing tourism demand.

“The scheme will increase choice for visitors and complement the many excellent hotels, already established in the area.”
