As many York cafés are preparing to reopen after the lockdown, one has announced that it has closed for good.
True Story, a family-run vegan café on Lord Mayor’s Walk, has bid a fond farewell to its customers.
The owners announced on Facebook: “One things leads to another and a new chapter begins.
“True Story is evolving… into our family home.
“We will not be reopening on July 4th and this is ‘Farewell Folks’.
“We’ve had a wonderful time and with beautiful memories the family would like to thank you all, we quite literally could not have done it without you.”
Friends and plaudits
The café – famous for being the building with the Bile Beans sign on its gable end wall – began as Me & Mrs Fisher and was later sold to Tom Murrell for £45,000.
He ran the café with daughters Etta and Fern, who took the decision to turn it vegan.
The relaxed vibe and fresh menu saw the café win plaudits, and a 4.5 rating on TripAdvisor
The news dismayed the café regulars. One said: “We are gutted that you’re ‘moving on and evolving’ but send you our love and blessings for a happy and successful future.
“We loved the whole experience of True Story and the food was pretty yummy too.”
The news follows announcements about the closure of Cafe Rouge, and two bars – the Brigantes and The Nook.
