Another York restaurant falls victim to the crisis

It is named after the Michelin-starred chef who has brought so much to York’s restaurant scene.

But now Mr P’s Curious Tavern will not be reopening.

The Low Petergate pub has remained empty and partially cleared of furniture since the lockdown.

It’s website says: “The new social distancing issues and continued restrictions imposed by the government for restaurants reopening following Covid-19 closure make it unviable to open Mr P’s Curious Tavern at this time.

“We will continue to review the situation in line with future changes to restrictions and will be making further announcements regarding Mr P’s in due course.”

But YorkMix has been told by a member of staff at the restaurant that it is closed for good.

Star reopened

A unique place to eat

Mr P’s Curious Tavern was opened in June 2016 in what was previously Georgina’s Café by chef-owner Andrew Pern.

The restaurant was very different to his other York venue, The Star Inn The City.

It offered small plates from around the world.

Andrew, who also runs the Star Inn in Harome and The Star Inn The Harbour, Whitby, has held a Michelin star for 15 years.

He opened the Star Inn The City in an 18th century pump room in Museum Gardens in 2013.

It has won rave reviews, but was hit by fire in November 2018, and didn’t fully reopen until the following year.

The Star has reopened after lockdown. But Mr P’s, housed in small listed building, does not have the room to operate viably under social distancing restrictions.

Earlier this month we revealed that at least 17 city centre businesses had closed their doors for good since lockdown.
