Major step forward in £32 million scheme to build flats and bridge in York city centre

Plans for a major city centre development have taken a step forward with a contractor chosen to complete the designs.

City of York Council’s scheme for Castle Mills will see 106 apartments built in Piccadilly, a new pedestrian and cycle bridge across the river Foss and a riverside park created behind the Castle Museum.

The project is set to cost £32 million, with the money made from selling the apartments due to be spent on the wider Castle Gateway regeneration scheme.

This includes plans to close Castle Car Park to turn it into a public events space and a proposal for a new multi storey car park at St George’s Field. Neither of these projects has been finalised yet.

The council has chosen construction company Wates to help them move the development forward by producing detailed designs and a full breakdown of costs for Castle Mills.

Senior councillors will then decide in October whether to go ahead with the build.

Cllr Nigel Ayre said: “Wates have been selected to carry out the detailed design and to provide the full tender cost for the Castle Mills development.

“The project has the potential to transform the Piccadilly area in York, through the creation of new homes, a riverside park and a new cycle bridge.

“That being said, it is also important that the Castle Mills development delivers value for money.

“Wates will produce a tender cost for the project, which will then be reviewed by the council’s executive in October. A decision will then be made on whether to progress the project.”
