Anyone wanting their first Covid jab will be able to get one at a walk-in vaccination centre in York from next week.

From Wednesday 30 June to Friday 2 July, a pop-up vaccination centre will open at York St John University.

The site, run by Nimbuscare, will enable both pre-booked and walk-in appointments at Foss Sports Hall on the University’s Lord Mayor’s Walk campus.

Open from 4pm to 9pm on Wednesday 30 June, and from 10am to 4pm on Thursday 1 and Friday 2 July, eligible individuals who are 18 or older will be invited to book their vaccine via text message from Nimbuscare.

Anyone who needs a first vaccine can attend without an appointment, but may need to queue.

Christina Nichols, Head of Strategic Projects and Change at York St John University said: “We are delighted to work with Nimbuscare to provide this city-centre service as the vital roll-out of Covid vaccines continues.

“Increasing access for our York community is incredibly important as we encourage all those eligible to get their vaccine, and we are proud to support these efforts.”

The Foss Sports Hall has been operating as a Covid testing site since November 2020. Testing will continue at the campus, moving to the University’s music block from 1 July. Bookings for symptom-free Covid tests should be made through the City of York Council website.

Meanwhile, people aged over 40 who haven’t yet had their first Covid jab can now walk into the main York Vaccination Centre and get a jab.

Anyone in that age group can go to the Askham Bar site any time between 8am and 8pm and get their first dose.

More pop-up walk-in centres are also being planned in the city.

So far, 27 per cent of people aged between 18 and 30 in North Yorkshire and Vale of York had had their first injection.
