North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have been called to an incident at Clifton Moor involving a fire at Burger King.
A spokesperson said: “We’ve got a number of crews at a fire to a commercial property on Stirling Road, York. They are likely to be at the scene for some time.
“Crews are using a hose reel jet and a main jet to fight the fire in the roof of the building.”
Witnesses told YorkMix that there was the smell of burnt beef burgers in the air.
Former Firefighter Ian Wright told YorkMix Radio what he had seen:
We actually came to go into Gregg’s and we could see that there was smoke coming from the building.
“So obviously, I’m a former firefighter and I’m a bit nosy, so I had to wander over.
“The fire had just already spread up into the roof so it looked like it’d been going a little while when we got there. But you know, within the sort of five or ten minutes that I was filming it it basically enveloped the whole building with the smoke escalating high into the sky so that when the wind started changing direction it was blowing across the whole of a car park.”

“All the staff were out of the building and it definitely escalated quite quickly just in the time I was there.
“It looked like they were about to deploy firefighters inside using breathing apparatus but I think that they realised how bad it had got because it was you could see the flames up into the roof and you could see the flames in the hole.
“In the downstairs of the building I saw a flashover which is, you know, it’s quite a rarity. If it flashes over, just basically it means the whole of the buildings on fire.”
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said in a statement: “Our control room received a call 14:41 to reports of smoke in the ceiling of a commercial property on Stirling Road in York. We’ve got a number of crews in attendance, including an aerial ladder platform. The water bowser from Tadcaster has also been requested to attend.
The fire is in the roof of the building and crews are using main jets to tackle the fire. The aerial ladder platform is also in use.
Crews are likely to be at the scene for some time.

Crews remain the the scene of the fire to the commercial property. The aerial ladder platform, water bowser, 2 hose reel jets and main jets are in use.
The officer in charge hopes to be able to scale the incident down soon, so some crews may start leaving the scene.
We would continue to ask people to avoid the area for the time being.

Councillor Darryl Smalley has just been to the site, and said he had lots of praise for how quickly @NorthYorksFire got the blaze under control. He said on Twitter “Thank you to all the emergency services who are still directing residents away from the area – Stirling Road and nearby areas much busier than usual, best to avoid the area for now.”
