North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue crews from across the county, including Malton and Pickering, were called out to deal with a serious fire in Scarborough.
Fire broke out in a souvenir shop in Newborough at around 6.28pm yesterday evening (Tuesday) and police asked the public to avoid the area.
The alarm was raised by someone in the flat above.
Appliances from Scarborough, Filey, Malton, Sherburn and Pickering went to the blaze. Nine firefighters using breathing apparatus were involved in tacking the fire.
Crews gained entry into the shop and extinguished the fire within a rear store room.
There has been extensive damage to stock and a staff area. The cause is still under investigation but doesn’t appear to be suspicious.
Six pumps attended. All persons in the flats above were accounted for.
The fire is now out, and the cause was accidental.
