Do your kids love school meals – or avoid them like the plague? Do they like the choice of dishes or find nothing to tempt them?

Pupils, parents and carers are being asked for their views on school meals in York as part of a campaign to encourage more young people to eat them.

City of York Council has set up a task force to look into the take-up of school meals generally and of free school meals in particular.

The group hopes that feedback from school pupils and their families will show why:

  • there is a relatively small increase in take-up of school meals across all York schools
  • some parents or carers who are entitled, do not register and claim for free school meals
  • lots of pupils, whose parents or carers have registered and claimed, do not take up the offer of a free school meal.

Councillors will also look at whether cashless payment systems for school meals work well.

“School meals have come a long way in the past few years since Jamie Oliver brought them to public attention,” said Mark Ellis, the council’s head of school services.

“I’d urge everyone to email or write in with their views so we can make York’s school meals as tasty and accessible as possible.”

To give your feedback, email the school meals service or write to Mark Ellis, Head of School Services, School Services and Directorate Support, West Offices, Station Rise, York, YO1 6GA.

All comments should be received by the end of Sunday 16 February.
