The A66 is open again in both directions between the A67 near Bowes and A1(M) J55 at ScotchCorner after a lorry caught fire.

Emergency Services, including North Yorkshire Police were dealing with the incident yesterday.

Traffic was being diverted leading to long delays.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: A large goods vehicle carrying waste batteries is currently well alight in a lay by.

“Fire crews from Richmond, Darlington, Barnard Castle and Bedale responded and were tackling the fire with hose reels.

“Public Health England was informed too as some smoke was being generated with the nearest village being Gilling West.”
