These are tough times to run a business and one owner in Selby says he’s been beaten by the rising costs associated with running it.
The “most difficult decision he has ever had to make” says Paul Gunther of the Fish Shop which looks after all you need to keep tropical fish.
Paul told YorkMix Radio he just couldn’t carry on in the face of everything from goods to power, heat and light going up and up. He knows it will only get worse too as 2022 continues.
“Our customer base has dropped dramatically and while we were holding on at first, it’s come to the time where we have had to close the doors”
“It’s a little bit raw at the moment. We have done this for seven years and had a lot of success”
Paul says that he will hopefully return with the Fish Shop when the economic situation is improved and he hopes to see his customers again one day soon.

Paul told his customers on his Facebook page this week.
“Ladies and gentlemen. This is a post we had hoped we wouldn’t have to do but unfortunately after the previous 7 yrs of being here…selling over one million fish…yes ONE million…helping so many people…raising funds for charitable and disasterous causes and helping to support local causes… We are having to say fairwell for now.
“The rising costs of energy, people not being able to afford the hobby and the rising costs of stocks etc mean that our business is no longer profitable or sustainable and means we have to close our doors but hopefully not forever as we hope that we can return later when things have settled down and the hobby picks up or we win the lottery etc.
“To all of our members…the page will stay open and we will still be here to help….but thank you for the support over the past 7 years. Your kindness means more than you can know.
“So with a heavy heart we are going to have a flash sale”
