A Journalist from York, who worked for the BBC for 30 years covering stories in the Harrogate and Ripon area, has received recognition for saving the sight of two women by simply carrying a donor card.
Alan Greveson worked for Radio York and died late last year.
It was his wish to be part of the organ donor scheme and this week his friends discovered that he had been given the Order of St John Award for Tissue Donors.
It honours the incredible gift donors and their families make by allowing their organs to save and improve the lives of others after they have died.
Tissue donation and eye-only donation is recognised under the scheme – in these cases an award is received by post rather than at a ceremony.
It was launched by the international humanitarian charity the Order of St John and NHS Blood and Transplant in 2013.
Alan’s corneas have been used for transplant, restoring and improving the sight of a 45-year-old woman and a 62-year-old woman.
In a letter from NHS Blood and Transplant they said the gift was much appreciated by the women and their families. Alan carried his card with him and wanted to help someone else after he had gone.
His friends in York said they were very proud to hear that he had received the award and hoped that others would look at making a similar provision, or letting their familes know that’s what they wanted to do, if they felt they could.
