Get a taste of alpine life – as something deliciously new is coming to York for Christmas 2022.

The Winter Hütte will be a pop-up, two-storey traditional Swiss chalet – with a fully licensed bar area downstairs and a new restaurant from Michelin-starred chef Andrew Pern upstairs.

The alpine landmark will open on Parliament Street from Thursday 17 November 2022 until Sunday 1 January 2023 and will be open every day from 10am until 11pm (closed on Christmas Day).

It will take the place of Thor’s Tipi, which is usually situated on Parliament Street during the York Christmas Market.

There will, however, still be a Thor’s Tipi at the Principal Hotel this Christmas.

At the Swiss chalet, the downstairs bar will serve seasonal favourites such as gluhwein and hot chocolate, as well as a gourmet sausage stall.

Andrew Pern, from critically acclaimed restaurants the Star Inn at Harome and York’s Star Inn the City, offers a ‘Swiss with a Twist’ dining experience in the upstairs restaurant – while the outdoor terrace makes a unique setting for a festive drink.

Andrew has been bringing restaurants and food to Yorkshire for over 30 years. His love of the alpine way of life has helped inspire The Winter Hütte menu.

That menu will include traditional fondue and raclette, specials such as pheasant with smoked garlic, alpine ‘spätzle’ dumplings, baked tartiflette with reblochon cheese – and more tasty treats.

“Together with the scent of pine and decor of mountain scenes and cow bells, The Winter Hütte will be a real experience for all the senses this Christmas,” said Andrew.

There will be a designated dining space downstairs for patrons requiring accessibility.

Never seen before

The Winter Hütte is a joint venture between Coopers Marquees, CMJ Events and Andrew Pern.

Johnny Coopers, from York-based Coopers Marquees, said: “The wooden Swiss Chalet concept was born a couple of years ago following a desire to build something new and exciting for York.

“Adding the second floor to the offering brings a new dimension that has never been seen before and the theming, detail and food and drink offering will make it authentic and give York something truly special this Christmas.”

There is an emphasis on sustainability and keeping it local for the build of the chalet. Collaborations with local companies will also be announced very soon.
