The A1M has reopened after the lorry crash which left it shut in both directions for many hours.

The lorry crossed over the carriageway, overturned and came to rest on its side.

Originally it was reported that it had hit a bin wagon. But National Highways has now clarified that the truck was carrying a refuse wagon. No other vehicle was involved.

Wreckage was strewn over both carriageways.

On Saturday morning, National Highways said: “The A1M has reopened between junctions 51 and 52 in North Yorkshire.

“This follows a collision yesterday morning (Friday) in which a HGV collided with the central reservation causing significant damage to the central barrier and both the north and southbound carriageways.

“Following extensive emergency repairs two of the three northbound lanes between Leeming Bar (51) and Catterick (52) reopened just after 7pm last night followed by two of the three southbound lanes shortly before midnight.

“Two inside lanes in both directions are expected to remain closed for the safety of those carrying out repair work on the central barrier which was badly damaged in the collision.”

They added: “Due to the extent of the damage to both vehicles, specialist teams were required to remove them from the carriageway. Significant damage to the road surface and a large diesel spill meant the road remained closed throughout the day.

“Road users are thanked for their patience while National Highways resolved the incident.”

Pictures taken at the scene showed one flat-bed HGV straddling the damaged central barrier and another lorry on its side across the carriageway.
