North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service has urged people to prepare as high winds are set to batter the area tomorrow.
The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for strong winds which covers York and North Yorkshire.
The warning lasts from 5am to 2pm tomorrow (Friday, 17 February).
The strong winds could cause injuries due to flying debris, damage to buildings and power cuts, the Met Office says.
“There is a small chance of longer journey times or cancellations as road, rail, air and ferry services are affected. High-sided vehicles may be particularly prone in this set-up,” it says.
In response, North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service has asked people in the county to take extra precautions.
On the day, it asks people to
- Only make essential journeys
- Check traffic announcements and obey any road closures
- Avoid wooded areas
- Be aware of your surroundings and look out for falling or flying debris.
And before tomorrow it advises residents to
- Secure all outdoor furniture, garden toys and equipment, if possible, move them inside
- Dismantle or ensure any trampolines are fully secured
- Secure all windows and doors, including garage doors
- Check and have a copy of your home insurance to hand
- Have a torch and spare batteries available and charge your phone to prepare for a possible power cut.
The fire service adds: “Please keep safe and remember, if you need us, we are only a phone-call away.”
