A main road in North Yorkshire has reopened after a serious crash at a notorious accident blackspot.

The A170 at Sutton Bank near Thirsk was closed in both directions for several hours.

North Yorkshire Police said at 5.48pm on Tuesday: “Sutton Bank is closed in both directions due to a serious collision.

“Access will be closed to everyone for some time so we urge you to find an alternative route.

“Traffic travelling eastbound will be directed off the A170 and through the Osgoodby Grange area.

“Traffic travelling westbound will be turned around at the National Park Centre where possible.

“Please avoid the area.”

The force then issued an update at 6am on Wednesday: “If you are about to start your morning commute then please note Sutton Bank is open in both directions following the closure yesterday evening (June 20).”
