One of York’s most iconic beer festivals is back – but in a brand new location.

The York Beer & Cider Festival normally takes place on the Knavesmire and features ‘Europe’s longest bar‘ – however the festival said on social media that after York Racecourse created a new race meeting over their usual event dates, they had to find a new location.

The York Beer & Cider Festival will now take place at St Lawrence Church on Lawrence Street, from Wednesday 13 to Saturday 16 September 2023.

The event organisers said that the new setting will give the festival a ‘real wow factor’.

Visitors to will be able to sample over 250 beers and ciders from across the UK and beyond, as well as wines, meads, prosecco, soft drinks and street food vendors – so there’ll be something for everyone to enjoy.

As well as the traditional Wednesday afternoon Trade Session, there are seven individual sessions this year.

Given the reduced capacity compared with the previous Knavesmire Marquee, would-be visitors are advised to buy advance tickets to avoid disappointment if some sessions sell out due to high demand.

There will be admission on the door for sessions with spare capacity.

Taking the opportunity with a city centre location, new for this year is a ‘Festival Fringe’ – where local pubs, clubs and other venues will be offering something a little extra for people attending the festival.

These will include tap takeovers, cellar tours and more.

See the map above of all the venues in York taking part in the Festival Fringe – such as The Blue Bell, Shambles Tavern, and The Rook & Gaskill.

Tickets are available from £4, with a £2 discount on advance tickets for CAMRA members. For more information and to book your tickets, visit the York Beer Festival website.
