A classic festive treat is coming to the Joseph Rowntree Theatre this Christmas – as NE Musicals bring A Christmas Carol to the stage.

The musical is based on the famous Charles Dickens novella about Ebenezer Scrooge, a mean man with a dislike for mankind.

It features music by Alan Menken, who’s best known for composing the scores and songs for Disney musicals such as The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and Newsies.

A Christmas Carol is at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre from Tuesday 28 November to Saturday 2 December 2023.

Lyrics are by Lynn Ahrens with book by Mike Ockrent and Ahrens.

It first premiered in New York in 1994 and has had concert productions in London – the most recent in 2020, which starred Brian Conley, Matt Willis and Lucie Jones.

In the NE Network production Kit Stroud plays miserly Scrooge who, one Christmas Eve, is visited by the ghost of his former partner Jacob Marley (played by Steve Tearle), who died seven years previously. He warns Scrooge that he can expect a visit from three ghosts – the Ghost of Christmas Past (Perri Ann Barley), the Ghost of Christmas Present (Chris Hagyard) and the Ghost of Christmas Yet-To-Be (John Mulholland). They warn that he must mend his ways if he’s to avoid the horrible consequences of treating people badly.

As well as ghostly figures, the story also features such comedy characters as Mr and Mrs Fezziwig (Ali Butler Hind and Greg Roberts).

With more than 60 people in the cast, this promises to be a true Christmas spectacular – a heart-warming festive story to kick start your Christmas.

NE Musicals have had recent sell-out success with its latest production of Grease, and earlier this year won a YorkMix Choice Award for Best Event for their production of Oliver!

Tickets for A Christmas Carol start from £16 and are available via the Joseph Rowntree Theatre website.
