Drive-thru bakery planned for York

A drive-thru bakery has designs on a road-side venue near York.

Cooplands is planning to serve up its range of sandwiches and baked sweet and savoury treats from a venue on the former Four Alls Inn site on the A64 Malton Road.

The retail unit was formerly the garage for the long-closed pub. Permission to turn it into a café with drive-thru was granted last December.

Now those plans look set to come to fruition with Scarborough-based Cooplands opening a café and drive-thru selling breakfasts, pastries and pasties, coffee and more.

Cooplands have applied to add a single storey extension to the retail unit to be used as a storage and washing area.

And they want permission to put up illuminated fascia signs, a totem sign and vinyl advertisments.

How the bakery would look

The three illuminated box signs would be positioned above the shop front and to either side.

Planning documents state: “Given both signs would be facing away from the residential dwellings to the west, and the future occupier (Cooplands Bakery/cafe) is expected to operate between 8am-5pm, the proposed internally illuminated box fascia with a luminance level of 320cd/m2, are unlikely to result in notable adverse impact on the amenity of the neighbouring dwellings to the west.

“Furthermore, an internally illuminated totem sign is to be erected along the site frontage facing Malton Road, which again, is not expected to have any material impact on the residential or visual amenity.”

And although the extension requires building in the Green Belt, the documents state: “The proposed single storey rear extension is considered to be of a proportionate scale to the existing retail unit, without resulting in urban sprawl or encroachment to the designed Green Belt.”
