York’s daily newspaper is downsizing its office space again.

Most of the York Press building on Walmgate will soon be given over to other businesses.

Both the ground and first floors of the three-storey building are up for lease.

However, the Press team will continue to be based on Walmgate.

Group editor Nigel Burton told YorkMix: “The Press is not moving from Walmgate. Our staff will continue to work from the offices there.

“We have some spare office space that we propose to let out.”

According to Barry Crux, the agents handling the lease, both the ground and first floor offices are available as a whole or in parts.

“The property is available to let at a rent of £53,000 per annum,” the details say.

“The landlord would consider separate lettings of each floor with the ground floor at £28,000 per annum and the first floor at £25,000 per annum.”

There are full details on property agent Barry Crux’s website here.

Long history

What was then the Yorkshire Evening Press moved from Coney Street to purpose-built offices on Walmgate in 1989.

This was a substantial building to house journalists, production staff, the sales team and many more.

The press hall where the paper was printed was located behind the offices, next to the Foss. For many years the huge rolls of paper – known as newsprint – were delivered along the river by barge.

Much of this building was sold and demolished to make way for student housing in a £35m scheme completed in 2014.

The remaining Press team then moved into old Poads corn and seed merchants building on the corner of Hurst’s Yard.

Now the Press is set to share that building with other city businesses.
