Updated: Six flood warnings now in force for York with more rainfall on the way

The Environment Agency’s incident room is open and the Foss Barrier deployed as new flood warnings were issued for York today (Monday).

As at 4.43pm today (Monday, 11 December), there are six flood warnings in place after the storms and heavy rainfall over the weekend.

Three new flood were warnings issued today – for the River Ouse at Acaster Malbis, at Skeldergate and Tower Street and at Fulford and Fordlands Road.

Levels surpassed 4m on Monday

Floodwater has blocked roads and closed bridges around York and Ryedale today – go here for the full details.

On the Fulford Road flood warning, the Environment Agency said: “Flooding is forecast to affect locations near the River Ouse, with low lying land expected to be most affected, particularly around riverside properties in Fulford from Blue Bridge Lane to the A64, and properties in the Fordlands Road area that can be cut-off by the road flooding.”

The agency said its incident rooms were open and the Foss Barrier deployed.


Flooding latest: Roads and bridges closed near York

Today’s flood warning for Skeldergate and Tower Street said: “Further rainfall is forecast for tomorrow,” it says.

“Areas most at risk include properties at lower levels on Skeldergate and on Tower Street near Tower Gardens.”

Most of the city remains unaffected and open for business.

The level of the River Ouse reached 4.18m at 5.55m today, but is forecast to start falling quickly tomorrow. The top of the normal range is 1.9m.

Here are all six flood warnings for York:

  • River Ouse at Acaster Malbis
  • River Ouse at Naburn Lock
  • River Ouse at York – Fulford and Fordlands Road
  • River Ouse at York – riverside properties
  • River Ouse at York – Skeldergate and Tower Street
  • River Ouse at York – St George’s Field and Queen’s Staith

Other flood warnings in North Yorkshire include:

  • River Derwent at Buttercrambe Mill
  • River Derwent at Stamford Bridge – The Weir Caravan Park and Kexby Bridge

Police have closed the bridge in Stamford Bridge due to the floods.

Fire crews were called to Castlegate in Malton last night (Sunday) to help agencies with pumping water away from properties in a number of locations around the area.

Today is forecast to be dry, but heavy rain is forecast for tomorrow.
