The East Coast Mainline has reopened after a collision caused major delays.

YorkMix reported that two trains were affected after colliding with an object, possibly an animal, near Danby Wiske in the Northallerton area.

It blocked the route between York and Newcastle. Many trains were cancelled and replaced by buses.

Some people reported being delayed for more than six hours.

There are still some knock-on effects this morning. See the latest on the LNER website.

Major rail delays after two trains hit an object in North Yorkshire

Rail passengers are suffering a travel nightmare tonight after a train hit an object north of York.

National Rail said: “A train hit an obstruction on the line between Darlington and York earlier this evening (Wednesday).

“The impact of the obstruction has caused damage to a train which now requires repairs before it can be moved. As a result, all lines remain closed whilst an engineer is on site.

“Trains running between these stations may be cancelled, severely delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised.

“Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.”

Services affected include LNER trains between London and Edinburgh, and TransPennine Express between Newcastle and York.

Some rail replacement services have been introduced.

YorkMix understands two trains were involved, an Edinburgh to London express, and a TransPennine service from York to Newcastle.

Both were damaged by an object near Danby Wiske, possibly an animal.

More updates on the National Rail website and via LNER on Twitter.
