New shop proposed for York – as restaurant plan is ditched

A new shop could soon open in York, in a spot previously earmarked for a restaurant.

The space next to Mirchiz restaurant at 100 Fishergate, on the corner of Marlborough Grove, is currently taken up by parking spaces.

But under plans submitted to City of York Council, a new shop would be built here.

Previously, permission had been granted for a two storey side extension, with a restaurant on the ground floor and a one-bedroom apartment above. However, that permission has now lapsed.

Under the new scheme, the two storey extension would have retail on the ground floor and a flat above.

Planning documents say that various factors have ‘massively impacted’ on the hospitality sector.

These included the pandemic, international conflicts and inflated utility bills. “The recent Red Sea crisis had really broken the camel’s back,” a statement says.

“All these factors had influenced in the economic decline and the UK had announced that they are in recession.

“All these unforeseen factors had contributed to many small (and even big) businesses to close.”

That is why they want to create a shop rather than a restaurant.

The plans are designed to be “compatible with neighbouring buildings and spaces and ensure residents living nearby are not unduly affected”.

The document, by Jade 3 architecture, says: “When a fresh use is established, it will assist to promote a strong, vibrant and healthy local community.”
