An artist in demand around the world is creating a dazzling new work in his home city.

Now based in Bristol, Sled One has worked in Amsterdam and Hanover, as well as London, Cardiff and Glasgow.

Born in York, he has returned here after being commissioned by the York BID to paint a new mural in the city centre.

Working in spray paints, Sled One has spent the past couple of days transforming the wall behind Browns store on Back Swinegate into something truly special.

At the heart of the design, which will be finished later this week, is a majestic Peregrine Falcon. The birds of prey now famously nest at York Minster.

His work has also featured at Spark:York.

The new artwork replaces a previous mural which had started to flake and disintegrate.

Rachel Bean, project manager at the York BID (Business Improvement District), told YorkMix: “Today we have the artist Sled One installing a new mural for us.

“It’s part of the Festival of Ideas. The theme of this year’s festival is ‘the power of’ – and this is our answer to that – it’s themed on the power of place.

“This is the fourth mural in the last year. We hope to be able to do two more before the end of the year.

“We’re trying to inject colour and vibrancy into York shopping streets and make them must-see destinations so that people come down here, maybe stop off at a business and find a new place to enjoy.”

She said they put out the mural to an open bidding process. Choosing the artist was tough due to the outstanding talent of those who applied.

“But hopefully you agree that this mural is just amazing,” Rachel said.

“We’re so grateful to Browns and to all the other businesses that we’ve worked with in the past, they’ve made it so easy for us.

“And I think now that we’ve got a few murals, people are really seeing the value of them.”

When the mural is finished, people will be encouraged to put their own artistic additions onto the bottom of the artwork on the theme of the power of place.
