A new St Leonard’s Hospice store will open its doors in Selby on the day of Bonfire Night.
People are being asked to bring donations into the new-look store at Gowthorpe, such as clothes, books, homewares and toys.
The new shop replaces the now closed Park Street branch in Selby, and will run in addition to the existing Ousegate shop which specialises in pre-loved furniture and vintage items.
Ricky Mohindra, head of retail at St Leonard’s Hospice, said Selby folk raise £155K a year.
“With this newly relocated shop we hope to increase this amount each year and we’re urging local people to dig out their unwanted items and bring them in,” he said
“Our physical stores work hand in hand with the hospice’s online store on eBay. We recently raised more than £560 from just two items which were donated to the Selby shops.

“A gold chain and an unwanted trophy were items spotted by our eagle-eyed staff as being valuable.”
More than 27 volunteers will work alongside five staff members across both Selby shops. By offering pre-loved items for sale within the stores and online, they will offset 1,244,186 kg of CO2 emissions and avoid 91,239kg of items going to landfill.
The new-look Gowthorpe store is part of St Leonard’s future vision, moving away from the traditional style of a local charity shop.
It will offer a unique high street shopping experience, complete with digital displays, modern lighting and touch screen information points. The shop will include the latest pre-loved fashion and homewares, toys and books, and offers a modern shopping experience.

And that’s not all, the new shop will have a dedicated denim department which is part of its drive to be more sustainable.
Ricky explained: “Thousands of litres of water are used in the manufacture of denim each year so why not help the environment by buying pre-loved items instead of new? We will be focusing one of the areas of the store on denim fashion, which we know is popular with our customers.”
The shop at Gowthorpe, Selby, is ideally situated for customers and will officially open on Tuesday 5 November at 10am and will then be open Monday to Saturday 9am to 4pm.
St Leonard’s Hospice provides care and support for people with life limiting illnesses. The hospice has been providing care for nearly 40 years within its hospice, in patients’ own homes and in the community.
