Calling all train enthusiasts and budding young photographers – this competition is for you…

The Young Railway Photographer of the Year competition is back, and there’s some fantastic prizes up for grabs.

Organised by the National Railway Museum and the Railway Photographic Society, the competition is back for its second time after it’s inaugural iteration in 2022.

Shortlisted entries will be displayed in exhibitions at the National Railway Museum in York and Locomotion in Shildon as part of the celebrations for Railway 200, the bicentenary of the modern railway, in 2025.

The Young Railway Photographer of the Year competition open for entries until 31 January 2025.

Railway 200 is a year-long UK-wide campaign led by partners in the rail industry to celebrate 200 years of the modern railway and inspire a new generation of young talent to choose a career in rail.

The co-sponsor for the competition is FUJIFILM UK.

To enter, young photographers are invited to submit a portfolio of six photographs around the theme of Railway 200. Images may include – but are not limited to – railway and carriage design, architecture and structures, travel experiences, and railway landscapes.

There’s the chance to win in three categories: overall winner, aged 18 and under, and aged 19-25. In 2022 the youngest entrant was just eight years old.

The competition is open to entrants of all photographic abilities, whether amateur or professional, and any devices capable of photography are allowed – including smartphones!

The 2022 overall winner was Bradley Langton (then aged 20) from Driffield, with a spectacular image from London King’s Cross station of an LNER InterCity 225, reflected in standing water.

The fantastic prizes up for grabs for the 2024 competition include a Fujifilm X-T5 Silver digital camera with XF16-50mm lenses, a tour on Network Rail’s New Measurement Train, a GB Railfreight cab simulator experience, heritage railway line tickets, and more.
