A new bar and deli is set to move into a long-empty building in York city centre.

Kaltur Restaurant Ltd plans to open a Spanish wine bar, restaurant and deli on Coppergate.

It wants to move into to the buildings previously occupied by Vitoria restaurant, and before that Russells.

There are two long established Kaltur restaurants in Newcastle, both run by the same Spanish family. They also own olive groves and a company importing their own extra virgin olive oil.

They opened their first Kaltur restaurant on High Bridge, Newcastle, in 2017, “with the idea of using it as a laboratory, playing with all the Spanish products and wines we import alongside other products we source locally, always pairing it with our family-produced Extra Virgin Olive Oil as a base of a healthy Mediterranean diet”, the website says.

It was followed by another branch on Dean Street in the city in 2019. They serve deli boards and tapas, alongside a range of Spanish wines.

Now their plan is to take over 24-26 Coppergate for their first UK venture outside Newcastle.

Plans are in to add illuminated and fascia signage onto the buildings.

When it was Vitoria
And when it was Russells

Number 26 Coppergate is a Grade II* listed building, with parts of it dating back to the 15th century. It was known as The Market Tavern from at least the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century.

A heritage statement says: “The advertisements feature a subtle design and will have no negative impact on the amenity of surrounding occupiers or pose any risk to public safety.

“They will serve to signpost the restaurant to potential customers and make them aware of the offering in a competitive city centre environment. Consequently, the visual impact of the signs on the surrounding area and the existing building will be minimal.”

Kaltur will bring new life to a building which has been empty for about 18 months.

Numbers 24-26 Coppergate, a building owned by City of York Council, was home to Russells carvery for 32 years before it closed in 2019.

In 2021, Vitoria, owned by another Newcastle-based restaurant company Prima Nova Ltd, refurbished the building and moved in. It closed in summer 2023.
