QueerArts are set to open a new accessible community space in York.

QueerArts, an organisation that champions queer arts and culture in York and beyond, are ‘thrilled’ to be opening QueerArts HQ – a space where community members can drop in to enjoy a coffee, socialise and explore their creativity.

Located at 31 Bootham Row in York, the community space will have a launch event on Saturday 22 February, before officially opening on Wednesday 26 February 2025.

Inside QueerArts HQ

QueerArts HQ will welcome visitors on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, from 11am to 3pm.

In addition to offering a relaxed drop-in environment, it will serve as a gathering point for small creative workshops, social, and community events throughout the year.

The community space has been made possible due to receiving a £490,851 grant from The National Lottery Community Fund.

This funding will start to build the foundations of QueerArts’ mission to open York’s first LGBTQ+ Creative Community Venue by 2027 — which will aim to shine a spotlight on LGBTQ+ history, arts, and culture.

Wayne Dawson, CEO of QueerArts, said that this funding will be “catalytic for our work in York and beyond.

“We’ve grown so much in the last two years, and the support from The National Lottery Community Fund, made possible by National Lottery players, is a significant step towards achieving our goal of opening an LGBTQ+ Creative Community Venue in York by 2027.

“This will help us champion queer art, artists, and performances, contributing to a more vibrant and inclusive cultural landscape in the city.”

Rachel Nesbitt, QueerArt’s community activity and volunteer coordinator added, “As we move further into a digital world, where technology connects us yet often leaves us feeling more isolated, the importance of real, in-person community spaces has never been greater.”
