Something delicious has opened in York today.
Black Wheat Club, at 52 Fossgate, opened its doors this morning (Thursday) at 9am.
The new bakery and bistro is aiming to serve up comfort food with an elevated twist – take a look inside in our gallery below.

It has opened in what was previously home to the vintage shop Bowler and Betty, which closed in 2023.
Black Wheat Club is the latest venture from Marta Obuchowska and Tomek Mlynarski, the couple behind the popular street-food stall Krep on Shambles Market.
YorkMix spoke with Tomek to find out more about the opening.
“I’m feeling stressed but also excited, I can’t compare it to anything else,” he said.
“We’ve been overwhelmed by positivity – our neighbours and communities, everyone is wishing us good luck. We’re so grateful to be able to do this right in the city centre.”

Tomek explained that people can expect “authenticity and honest food” from Black Wheat Club.
“We’ve put a lot of effort into preparing the space, so we’re hoping everyone will love it.
“The food we’re going to serve is going to be a reflection of where we come from and what we believe in. There will be a lot of hearty and satisfying meals.
“We make everything in house and we’re proud of that – we’re not planning on taking any shortcuts.”
The in-house bakery will be upstairs at the Black Wheat Club, which will produce bread for the kitchen and home-made sandwiches as well as fresh pastries which will be available from the counter.
Hot dishes include elevated scrambled eggs and a morning stew – “That’s something I’m really excited for people to try.
“Everything’s going to have a little bit of a Black Wheat Club twist.”
They are also using a lot of local suppliers, including Yorkshire Organic Millers and Botton Creamery.

The bistro and bakery will offer sit-in and takeaway, with approximately 45 covers inside. It has also created 12 jobs – after Tomek said they received “hundreds” of applications.
“We were overwhelmed,” he said. “We’re so proud of everyone who has joined us.”
Though it opened at 9am this morning, the Black Wheat Club aims to open earlier going forward to allow for their bakery offering. It will then close at 3pm or 3:30pm “depending on how the day goes.”
Also forthcoming in the “really close future” is the eatery operating as a bistro and wine bar too, which will mean it’s open in the evenings too with a small plate menu and wine offering.
Black Wheat Club joins a thriving food-and-drink scene on Fossgate – which includes fantastic independent York eateries like Spring Espresso, Lè Specialty, The Blue Barbakan, The Hairy Fig, Ambiente Tapas, and The Fossgate Social.
