An inquest has been opened into the death of a York student in the River Ouse last month.
Evan Geoffrey D’Andilly died after entering the water at 3.06am on Wednesday, 5 March – four days before his 20th birthday.
Today North Yorkshire assistant coroner Dr Gill Kane opened the inquest at Northallerton.
Evan was born in Scunthorpe and was a student at the University of York. At the time of his death he was living in Gunness, Scunthorpe.
Dr Kane told the inquest that Evan was seen to enter the River Ouse from Ouse Bridge.
His body was recovered at Queen’s Staith at 11.45am the same morning.
Evan’s father Gordon identified him. The provisional cause of death is drowning.
The inquest was adjourned to a date to be fixed.
Where to get help

Evan’s family said in a statement after his death: “Evan was, and always will be, our sunshine, our boy.
“He was bright, funny, loving, kind, generous, laid back and had a smile that lit up a room.”
A riverside resident called for better rescue equipment to be installed by the Ouse after witnessing the tragedy.
Michael Neal has submitted his evidence to the police for the coroner.
