Anyone hoping for a quiet stroll in the sunshine in York this lunchtime got a rude awakening.
The city was deafened by the roar of low flying jets shortly before 1pm.
The noise was so loud that the whole city was looking up to try and see the source.
One worker said: “What on earth was that? The whole building shook!”
People took to social media asking the same question. “I thought we were being invaded, it was awful,” said one.
Another resident added: “We hear them all the time over the Tang Hall side of town but I’ve never heard them that loud.”
Because they didn’t have their transponders switched on, the aircraft didn’t appear on any tracking websites.
But a York aviation expert witnessed the planes and told YorkMix: “It was two US F15s.
“They were flying particularly low, and looked to be practicising dogfighting over York.
“They’re likely to be based at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk.”
So now you know. They’ve long since departed, leaving York to echo to more traditional sounds like over-amplified buskers and irritable geese.
