A York football fan who was left seriously injured after falling from a tree during Leeds United’s promotion celebrations has woken up from a coma.

Ed O’Brien, 23, a Leeds United supporter, suffered life-threatening injuries after falling onto concrete in Millennium Square during the club’s parade on 5 May.

Ed was rushed to Leeds General Infirmary, where he remained in a coma for six days.

Ed’s Mum Stacey Barker said he regained consciousness on Monday. She praised the hospital staff, saying they had “worked what I can only describe as a miracle.”

Stacey told the BBC: “It is clear he has a long way to go just now but, for the first time since the initial prognosis was delivered, we feel more than confident that Edward stands a fantastic chance of a very good recovery.

“It is more than any of us ever dared to hope only eight days ago.

“The relief we feel is simply indescribable, we couldn’t be any happier right now.”

During Ed’s time in hospital, his friend Harvey Rushton launched a JustGiving fundraising page to support Ed’s family.

Writing on the page, Harvey said, “His mum and dad both live in York and at this time it will be costing them both a lot in travel and time off work, so I am just hoping we can all raise some money to take that stress away from them. MOT – stay strong Ed.”

Originally aiming to raise £750, the campaign has far surpassed expectations, with donations just shy of £15,000.

Ms Baker said that the generosity of those who donated will “without a doubt, give Edward the very best chance possible as we navigate our changed reality.”
