Filming has started on the second series of Patience, the hit crime drama set right here in York – and there’s a new star joining the cast.
The series follows Patience, a young woman with autism, as she navigates her role within the criminal records department of the City of York Police.
Patience was Channel 4’s biggest drama of 2025, with an average of 4.2 million viewers
For the highly anticipated second series, BAFTA-winning actor Jessica Hynes will be joining the cast as DI Frankie Monroe, a new boss who brings a fresh, and potentially disruptive, dynamic to the team.
The British actress, director, and writer is well-known for her roles in numerous dramas, including The Royle Family.
Returning for an extended duration of eight episodes, the new series sees Ella Maisy Purvis as Patience, continue to bring a unique insight into a series of perplexing cases after establishing herself as an invaluable member of the team.

However, with DI Monroe’s arrival and her very different management style, tensions begin to rise.
Adding a touch of romance, love is in the air as Patience begins a relationship with work colleague Elliot, played by Tom Lewis.
The police department also undergoes a makeover with the arrival of a new PR consultant, all whilst the team continues tackling intriguing crimes in extraordinary settings, such as York Minster.
Speaking on the first series, which aired 8 January this year, Ella Maisy Purvis said: “The response and popularity of Series 1 was staggering, so I am beyond thrilled to dive back into the world of Patience for a Series 2, especially because we have some brilliant new cases to crack. Buckle up!”

Jessica Hynes added: “I am thrilled to be joining the cast of Patience as DI Frankie Monroe – I hugely enjoyed the first series as a viewer and looking forward to joining the team for the second series to be in the middle of the action.”
Alongside Jessica Hynes will be the regular cast members from series one, including Nathan Welsh as DS Jake Hunter, Mark Benton as Calvin Baxter, Adrian Rawlins as Douglas Gilmore, Ali Ariaie as DC Will Akbari, Connor Curren as Billy Thompson, and Liza Sadovy as Dr. Loretta Parsons .
Patience is produced by Eagle Eye Drama, which is part of ITV Studios. Chief Executive Jo McGrath is delighted at the positive response received from the first series.
She said: “We’re so proud of Patience’s success in the UK and the extended recommission is a real testament to the quality of our cast and talented crew, guided by our outstanding director Maarten Moerkerke. Series 2 promises to be even more action packed, culminating with a nail-biting hostage storyline and a shocking family revelation for Patience.”
