Overall it’s not been the best year for the rich. But let’s be honest, every year’s a good year to be fabulously wealthy.
The Sunday Times Rich List is out for 2025 and chronicles the wealth of the top 350 people in Britain, who share £772 billion between them.
The King has done well, with his fortune up by £30m to £640m – although other estimates put his wealth at nearer £2 billion.
But the full value of the list is down three per cent and it has seen and a record drop in the number of UK billionaires in the Rich List’s history.
But what about in our part of the world?
Well, our best earning dynasty have had a rather profitable 12 months.
The Shepherd family have climbed 38 places on the chart to number 118. According to the expert bean-counters, their fortune has increased by £246 million to £1.35 billon.
It follows the sale of the Portakabin business, reportedly to French group Antin Infrastructure Partners.
The Sunday Times listing says: “Renowned from rolling out the Portakabin modular building — and zealously protecting its trademark. The family last year completed the sale of the York-based business.”
Other rich folk with North Yorkshire links included Richmond MP and former PM Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty who are at 238 with combined wealth of £640m, down £11m.
And the Scarborough-based John Guthrie and family, owner of Broadland Properties, have enjoyed a £19m jump in their wealth, taking it to £390m.
