A work of Banksy-style street art which appeared in York city centre has got people talking.
The stencilled picture, which shows a girl reaching up and defacing the Mona Lisa, is on the wall of a building on Market Street.
Lucy Newman, who works at The Divine Project coffee shop next door to the mural, said she discovered the artist at work.
“It was maybe three weeks ago, and a guy came – it must have been about half nine when he started, that’s when I get here,” she told YorkMix.
“He probably spent an hour and a half doing it, because we came to take the furniture out and he was with a couple of people.
“He didn’t really say much. He just didn’t want to be a bother about using the furniture to put his cans and stuff on.”
Lucy said a lot of people who come into the café talk about the picture.
Does she think she disturbed the real Banksy at work?

“I’m not sure! There’s a lot of chatter about it, and I’ll overhear people talking about it, but I don’t know.
“It’d be cool if it was, because I did speak to him!”
It’s not the first time Banksy style art has appeared in York. A picture of a jester appeared on the wall of an outbuilding at The Lighthorseman pub, Fulford Road, in September 2022.
A Manchester-based street artist styling himself as Mr Eggs later claimed he was behind that one.
